5 years since my original thought of creating a large butterfly themed art installation piece, I have found a home in which to build: Cairns Botanic Garden Visitor’s Centre. A bit of Day 1:
This place is hopping with arts activities in multiple genres such as Sorority which is celebrating International Women’s Day.
A couple reference shots on a hot, muggy, rainy day…
Great performance by The Painted Ladies!! A bang-up first day in Cairns!!

Butterfly Rainforest: Preparing for flight
10 April – 11 May
Deanna Gabiga is an American fibre artist and metalsmith based in Tokyo, creating sculptures and large scale installation pieces utilizing textile techniques.

Inspired by her travels in Australia, Deanna has created designs specific to butterfly species native to Far North Queensland. Come and watch the rainforest grow. Follow the life-cycle of tropical butterflies as they prepare for flight. Then after the installation is done, learn some of Deanna’s fascinating techniques in a series of workshops.
